I Had A Dream

Have you ever had a dream? One that you were afraid to say out loud, afraid to tell to anyone?
I had such a dream once.
Since my teens, I wanted to be a writer. Maybe the dream even began in elementary school because I distinctly remember writing a dreadful story about a farm cat named Burnt Bacon. But somehow my dream got shelved and life went in another direction.
After many years, I forgot my dream. Sometimes when you are so hurt, so afraid, you can stuff things very, very deep. But three years ago, the voice of Lucy began speaking to me, so I wrote down her words.
Although I’d written business letters and health blogs before, I hadn’t written fiction since high school (and I’m not referring to those fake notes from my mother excusing me from class.) It was a huge learning curve. (Raise your arms overhead and shout Yee Haw along with me!) What a ride.
I took what I knew—holistic health—and incorporated it into Lucy’s story. The result was Breathing With Trees, a young adult, coming of age story.
Moral of the story? Don’t give up on your dreams. Even if it takes 50 years (like me), it’s worth it.
